Manuela Leemann was selected as a Rotary exchange candidate a few years ago by Switzerland to fulfill her dream of seeing America. Shortly thereafter, a sports accident left Manuela a quadriplegic with a dream unfulfilled.
Manuela has blown the dust off her dream. She is now experiencing American culture first hand with the help of Rotary.
Maureen Herzig is a veteran Rotary exchange student who has completed short-term exchanges to Texas, Illinois and Israel. Maureen, as an exchange student, is also Manuela's helper during their adventure, an awesome example of service above self.
Hundreds of Rotarians throughout the USA, Canada and Switzerland are collaborating on the M&M Exchange to promote disabled exchanges.
Manuela and Maureen are journeying for five months through New York, Florida, Texas, California, Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, Ontario and Massachusetts from March to August 2001. M&M also attended the R.I. Convention in San Antonio.
For those who wish to hear from M&M as they chronicle their adventure, you may subscribe to the M&M eBulletin by sending a blank email to mmrotary-subscribe@egroups.com.
There's More ...
Manuela and Maureen wish to honor the many Rotarians who voluntarily mobilize thousands of exchange students each year.
M&M also see their journey as an opportunity to help disabled people in other parts of the world.
By collaborating with Rotary Clubs, Corporate America and the Wheelchair Foundation, Manuela and Maureen are arranging for 1200 wheelchairs to be shipped to disabled children and adults in Brazil, India, Mexico, Swaziland and Turkey.
The project cost is $180,000.
Thank you Manuela and Maureen for being so special.
