Kate - Let me respond to your question as a parent of a Rotex.
Our daughter was in Neunkirchen, Austria, from August 1999 to July
2000. Her dad and I met her in Vienna the last week of June and
stayed for three weeks. We had a FABULOUS time!
The key to the visit IS the timing. While we were there, Erin was our
tour-guide; she knew the language, customs, currency, train schedules
and everything that it took to make the trip really comfortable (since
her dad only speaks a little German and I am totally "German
challenged!") Also, we had the chance to visit her school (two days
before their summer vacation!), her friends, her teachers, and all of
the people she was close to. We were even able to attend the
"Damen" meeting of her host Rotary club! The Austrians were
incredibly nice and made our visit especially wonderful.
Because we had the opportunity to visit Erin in her "new" hometown,
we can understand her longing for the people and the culture that
she found through her exchange. In fact, she has been working part-
time this summer so she can go back to visit for two weeks during her
Christmas break. (She is a sophomore at Southwestern Univ. in
Georgetown, TX, majoring in German!) I recommend a visit as long
as it does not interfer with what YOU are there to learn!
BEST WISHES!
-Martha P.
