Academic Exchanges

"Rotary Exchange students reach into the hearts of other cultures to understand the differences which separate us as human beings". - Karen Connelly, Canada, on exchange to Thailand.

Introduction

Rotary Clubs in the USA and Canada sponsor high school students, like yourself, to study at a high school abroad and live with host families in a foreign country for an academic year.

In return, a student from your destination country comes to your American or Canadian community for an academic year.

Somewhere in the world, there is a teenager dreaming of coming to the USA or Canada. When you choose Rotary Youth Exchange, you make your dream and somebody else's dream come true.

We ask that your parents host the reciprocal foreign exchange student for part of the academic year, and help us find other suitable host families.

During your stay abroad, you will be an integral part of your host families and be treated as their son or daughter.

When you have questions or concerns during your exchange year, you will have a caring Rotary counselor nearby to help you.

Am I eligible?

  • You are 15 to 18.5 years old when school starts abroad
  • You attend high school
  • You have average or above average grades
  • Children of Rotarians and non-Rotarians are eligible.

I am younger than 15, what about me?

No problem. Apply now and this gives Rotary a year or more to make sure you get your first choice of countries.

How much does it cost?

The average cost of a year-long exchange is about $3,000 including airfare; costs may vary depending on where you live in the USA or Canada.

You will receive orientation, health insurance, a Rotary blazer, business cards, and pins to exchange with others.

The host Rotary Club in your destination country provides you with up to three caring host families, free meals and accommodation, free tuition, and a monthly allowance, which varies from $50 to $100 monthly, depending on the country.

You pay for your passport, a visa if necessary, and you take some spending money with you.

From your parents' perspective, it is often less expensive for you to go abroad than to stay home! Cool.

Where can I go?

Exchange opportunities are available throughout the world. Your preference is accommodated if possible.

Dream big! Where will your adventure be?

What's in it for me?

When can I apply?

You may apply for an exchange anytime throughout the year.

Do you have a brochure?

Are exchanges available in my community?

Due to the decentralized nature of Rotary International, sometimes a Rotary Club in a community may not offer an exchange opportunity. Program details and costs could also vary by State and Province.

What's the next step?

We need to put you in touch with a Rotary official in your community to help you.
